THE WALLS is a project that I started in 2013 as two white walls on the outside of my studio in Miami on Queensland’s Gold Coast. With the support of Arts Queensland the project relocated to Mountain View Avenue in Miami and swiftly grew into a bonafide white cube space.
Known as the THE WALLS ART SPACE (TWAS) since incorporating in the new space in 2014, THE WALLS is a nationally recognised regional Artist Run Initiative (A.R.I.). It is run by artists to support artists to present work that is experimental and innovative through its offerings of exhibition and studio space, performance events, publications and discussions. THE WALLS’ aim is to serve as a hub of creative practice, critical dialogue and innovative thinking around contemporary art. Our mission is to connect people with current and experimental art on the Gold Coast. Our vision is to provide transformative art experiences and enrich the Australian cultural landscape.
As Artistic Director of THE WALLS since its inception, I have had the privilege of working with over 100 artists to present over 60 exhibitions and events. During this time THE WALLS has twice received triennial funding from City of Gold Coast, and has received project funding from Arts Queensland, Regional Arts Development Fund Gold Coast and Screen Queensland on multiple occasions.
THE WALLS has supported artists in collaborative curatorial projects in Melbourne and Canberra, and has partnered with Artist Run Initiatives to deliver projects, including Screen Space, Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Stable ARI, Outer Space, Maverick Art Space and DM Projects.
THE WALLS has been featured in VAULT, Art Monthly, Un Projects, Byron Arts Magazine, RealTime, Gold Coast Bulletin, Blank Magazine and on Channel 7 TV, and ABC and 4ZZZ Radio.
