Artist Statement
Tacit Mirage is a solo exhibition of new work.
The exhibition features new video and paper collage works that combine personal archives, and experiences of water and flow states. Tacit Mirage continues my map making exercises, navigating the Coral sea, connected waterways and notions of transcendence through the Lotus Street site. The sybolism of the lotus is picked-up in the work, pools of coloured light illuminating the interior of Wreckers, the artwork auras rising from the old industrial building with remnant oil patina in the same way the lotus grows out of muddy sediment.
The video collages are made up of layers of artwork and personal archives including VHS, MiniDV, Super 8, HD and 4K video. The layers are edited to form visual pools of sparkling colour that present old works and memories in new light. I refer to these video works as meditations and video paintings, and of the layers as ripples in water or tree rings carbon dating my life. In this site the layers are akin to lotus petals, the ripples mirroring the corrugated iron the construction of the building as well as the layering of glass louvres and hardwood studs.
