THE WALLS was a project that I started in 2013 as two white walls on the outside of my studio in Miami on Queensland’s Gold Coast. With the support of Arts Queensland and the collaborative effort of Dylan Quirk (and a few mates) the project relocated to Mountain View Avenue in Miami in late 2013 where a bonafide white cube space with mezzanine studio and storage was established in an old mechanics workshop.

Also known as the THE WALLS ART SPACE (TWAS) since incorporation in 2014, THE WALLS was recognised nationally as a regional Artist Run Initiative (A.R.I.). The space was run by artists to support artists to present current and experimental artwork through its offerings of exhibition and studio space, performance events, international exchange, publications and discussions. THE WALLS’ mission was to connect people with current and experimental art on the Gold Coast, and to provide transformative art experiences and enrich the Australian cultural landscape.

As Director of THE WALLS since inception, I had the privilege of working with hundreds of local, national and international artists to present exhibitions, publish texts and stage performances. Under my leadership THE WALLS twice received triennial funding from City of Gold Coast, and received project funding from Arts Queensland, Regional Arts Development Fund Gold Coast, Screen Queensland and HOTA (Home of the Arts).

THE WALLS supported artists in collaborative and curatorial projects in Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra, and partnered with other Artist Run Initiatives to deliver projects, including Screen Space, Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Stable, Maverick Art Space, Metro Arts, Outer Space and DM Projects. THE WALLS was featured nationally in the media including on the cover of Art and Australia, in VAULT, on Channel 7 television and on ABC radio.
